Top 3 ways Blogs could be used in my French class:
1) As a supplement to Cultural topics discussed in class.
Since NYS is a Regents-based state where test scores are considered extremely important, cultural topics are oftentimes skimmed over in order to provide more time for grammar and other topics pertinent to students' success on the LOTE Regents. A Blog could provide links where students could find additional information related to cultural topics discussed in class.
2) Communication between American students and French students
My school has a foreign exchange program in which students and teachers from a French school come to stay for a week with American teachers and students who are taking French as a foreign language. This Blog could allow students a safe place to communicate with students that may be coming to stay with them or it could be used as a pre-discussion/post-discussion forum for questions that students may raise before or after the program happens.
3) Photo Blog
Providing students an opportunity to post pictures of different trips that they took, photos related to material we are covering in class (impressionist paintings, French art, etc.), or pictures from their French exchange program experience, would be a unique and exciting way for students to communicate with other students (French/American) and their classmates. This would also provide students an opportunity to comment on their experiences and thoughts regarding different photos.

MMe Sorensen,
ReplyDeleteI particularly like your last thought about using blogs to discuss pictures. That idea has a lot of potential. Depending on the situation, students could post in either English or French.

I think anything cross cultural, like example two, is great. Allowing the students a meaningful way to speak with other students before they come would ease the transition. The traveling students would get to show their parents where they are going and ease everyone's fears. They would know what they really had to bring with them. They could even start planning activities before they arrived
ReplyDeleteThat is great to have the kids meet in a space that they are so comfortable in. Also, it could be used as a way to stay in contact with more people at one time. I was listening to a show on NPR that talked about how having two-way conversations with a million people is impossible. However, spaces such as this blogging website allows for multiple people have many conversations at one time. The student could get messages from friends and family members faster than calling or even IMing a few at a time. Lastly, I had a thought that the kids could even use their blogs as a way to earn credit at their school(s). They could potentially use this site to teach kids back home about wherever they are at the time. They could answer questions posted from classmates or even complete some sort of assignment about culture in the foreign land.
ReplyDeleteI really like your idea about using a photo blog, as long as students are respectful and responsible regarding the photos that they post. This would probably also involve talking to them about citing the websites that they obtain pictures from if it is not a personal photo. This is a great way to have students interact in a meaningful way with the course material! A great suggestion!
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to have students and teachers from a French school to meet with your French class. What a great opportunity you'll be offering them by using blog so that they are able to communicate before they get together. I think that using pictures its a great idea, as long as you could check them before they do send them.
